Notes
for CATHERINE SHUMAKE: (Gathered by H. D. Shuemake)
Catherine Shoemake, b. 8 September 1807, who married Zemeriah Card,
b. 10 October 1804; the couple owned 5,000 acres of land on top
of Walden's Mountain east of Pikeville, just off Highway 30, between
Pikeville and Dayton, TN. After her husband died, she is shown with
5,000 acres. Remember Catherine was the daughter of Elizabeth (Betsy)
Thomas who was the wife of John Shoemake who died about 1814.
Property previously owned by Zemeriah and Catherine Card
In a court document, dated March 13, 1849, regarding John Thomas'
will, a second Catherine, mother of Elizabeth who married John Shoemake,
is shown to be his widow. This could be the reason why Elizabeth
named her daughter Catherine, she named her after her mother. There
was a disagreement over a will that Catherine had made preceding
her death that involved John's four daughters, Lydia Gore, Clara
Lewis, Elizabeth Shoemake, and Margaret Hood (?). It appeared that
Catherine was not following the will made by John Thomas, her husband
and the daughters were contesting Catherine's will. Apparently in
John's will Catherine was to have the property until her death and
then it was to be equally divided among the four daughters. However,
Catherine had willed it all to Lydia. Catherine's will was contested
and the other daughters were asking that her will be set aside and
that the property be divided as set forth in the will of John Thomas.
(Ref. Court proceedings of Bledsoe County)
Catherine's father and mother were believed to be
John Shoemake and Elizabeth (Betsy) Thomas.
In a record found in a Bible owned by John Thomas,
he recorded his tour of duty as a member of the Militia during his
17th, 18th, and 19th year of his age. He stated that he was born
in Frederick County, VA., on November 25, 1760. On September 4,
1843, Catherine declares she married John Thomas in March of 1780
and her husband died on January 25, 1843. The marriage was witnessed
by Elisha Kirklen and William Brown.
On September 14, 1843 John Thomas (Jr. ?) is clerk and Bird Thomas
affirms authenticity of family record and birth of John Thomas His
record:
>>>>>1. Ellis Thomas was born September 27, 1786
>>>>>2. Abraham was born 1789
>>>>>3. Elizabeth, December 20, 1791
>>>>>4. Margaret, February, 179 ?
>>>>>5. Andrew, Auguat 25, ????
>>>>>6. Lydia, July 25, ????
>>>>>7. Bird, January 19, 1800
>>>>>8. Charley, December, ????
>>>>>9. Catherine Shoemake was born September 8,
1807. *
>>>>>10. Isaac Gore Shoemake was born Tuesday, January
10, 1813.
* It is believed that Catherine and Isaac Gore Shoemake were the
children of Elizabeth Thomas Shoemake, who was the widow of John
Shoemake who died in, or about, 1814 and that they were living with
their grandfather John Thomas. If the above record is acurrant,
Elizabeth was about 16 years of age when her Catherine was born.
* In order to keep things in order, one must remember that Elizabeth
Thomas Shoemake had the following children: Catherine Shoemake and
Isaac Gore Shoemake. Catherine Shoemake, daughter of Elizabeth,
married Zemeriah Card. Card's name was listed on the Federal Census
as "Zimri" which was a shortened form of the name Zemeriah.
John Thomas served 3 tours of duty, 3 months each and was pensioned
on June 7, 1833 to commence March 4, 1831. Certificate #15,700.
On June 3, 1844, Catherine Shoemake Card repeats her declaration;
certified by Isaac Stephens, J.P. She was pensioned at $30.00 on
March 9, 1844, certificate No. was 8, 173.
Zemeriah Card and Catherine Shoemake had the following children
in 1850 according to the Federal Census:
>>>>>Zemeriah Card was listed as being 45 years of
age.
>>>>>Catherine was listed as being 39 years of age,
>>>>>Children:
>>>>>Abraham B. (male) 15
>>>>>Joseph, (male) 14
>>>>>Andrew (male) 13
>>>>>Mary A. (female) 9
>>>>>Catherine, (female) 6
>>>>>Adalade E. (female) 4
>>>>>Deby (female) 4
>>>>>Elizabeth Shoemake, ( has been referred to as
Betsy) a daughter of John Thomas, married a John Shoemake who died
around 1813.. The couple had two children who were Catherine Shoemake
and Isaac Gore Shoemake. Catherine married Zemeriah Card. This being
the case, their father would have been John. (Not John Fletcher,
but the John who signed the petition in 1807 and bought land from
Thomas Holaway).
It is further believed by some that this same John Shoemake who
was the husband of Elizabeth, died around the year of 1814. (Ref.
This information is gleaned from published material: court documents,
and from the descendants of Zemeriah Card).
A story told me by Mr. Rothwell who lives on top of Walden's Mountain
on the same land owned by Zemeriah and Catherine Card was about
Zemeriah. He said that Zermerich was a recruiter for the Union Army
during the Civil War between the states. He would recruit young
men for the Northern Army and housed them in a large cave situated
up on the mountain until he could smuggle them behind enemy lines
to some northern state.
In 1828, Elizabeth Shoemake is shown owning 5,000 acres of land
near the Hamilton County Line. Mr.Robert Rothwell whom I visited
on June 22, 2006, stated that Zemeriah Card acquired the land through
a land grant and homesteaded it. (Ref. First Families of Marion
County, Tennessee., 1809-1836 + 1840 Census, page 232 and 245 D.)
In the 1837 tax list, one will find Zimeriah Card, Isaac Shoemate,
John Shoemate, Eli Thurman, John Thomas. They are all in district
6. That is the district where the town of Pikeville is. That would
be where highway 30 and the Kiuka trace go into the Sequatchie valley.
The Indians came across the Kiuka trace coming from the Tennessee
River and going intothe Sequatchie Valley.

Notes for SUSANNAH "SUSAN" SHOEMAKE:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Susannah could have been the daughter of Hannah or married one of
her sons. Marriage records for NC list Susannah Shumake Vannoy to Thomas
Sutherland. No date given. Some list her as Susannah Vannoy although I
have not found proof of this. 1880 she says her mother was born in SC,
same place Hannah was born.
She is believed to have been living in the household of Hannah Shumake
in 1840. Ages for both Susannah and Scottie are provided there. Living
next door is a John Shumake. Perhaps her husband. Her daughter had a son
named John Thomas Ferguson. Thomas for her husband's father's name, perhaps
John for her fathers name?

Letter to H. D. Shuemake
January 25, 2003
Dear Mr. Shuemake:
Some weeks ago I wrote to inform you that Hannah Shumake had a daughter,
named Susan, born in 1823. I've learned a bit more since then, some of
which relates to the material at your web site, particularly to the presence
of Shumake children in the Sutherland family in 1850. Since I suspect
it may interest you also, I'm passing it along.
I first heard that Hannah Shumake was Susan's mother back in 1967 when
I drew up my family tree for a school project. I was given more details
in a 1990 letter from my grandmother. She wrote, "William Isaac McGarr
married Susan Shoemake. Her mother's first name was Hannah. We don't know
her last name. He was born in Ireland and it is believed Susan was too.
... He came to America as a stowaway on a ship, so she must have come
later.
"Their sons were Frank, James K. Polk, and John R. Their daughters
were Scotty, Emma, Margaret, Martha Ann (who was your great great grandmother)
and Annie."
Let me say that this family tradition is remarkable because, although
it correctly records the names of Susan's children, it is demonstrably
false in other ways. For instance, I have yet to find William Isaac McGarr,
though Susan did marry a James McGarr, who appears in the 1860 census
for Bledsoe County, Tennessee (dwelling 356). (Perhaps William Isaac was
James' father.) The children do not share a single father, but seem to
have three separate fathers. Also, Susan was born in Tennessee, not Ireland.
An examination of the census records makes me wonder whether Susan was,
indeed, Hannah's daughter. She may have been her daughter-in-law.
You have an image posted at your web site of a portion of the 1850 census
for Bledsoe County, TN, which includes the Sutherland family. Thomas Sutherland,
age 60, is the head of household. Susannah, age 27, is there as well,
followed in the listing by two older Sutherland children. Then Scotty
Shumake's (12) name appears, followed by Margaret (9), Emily (7) and David
F. Sutherland (10 months). Susannah is plainly Susan Shoemake: she is
the right age and the children have the right names. (I believe David
F. is Frank; the 1860 census makes this plain.) She is also only four
dwellings removed from Hannah.
(In 1840, Susan would have been 17, and her daughter Scotty, 2. They could
thus be the two females, one zero to five, the other fifteen to twenty
years old, who appear in Hannah's household in that year).
Susan seems to have given birth to three Shumake children, then married
the elderly Sutherland, who fathered her fourth child, Frank. On the hypothesis
that Susan was Hannah's daughter, and a Shumake herself, why were the
first three children (Scotty, Margaret and Emily) given the Shumake name?
The most likely alternatives are: (1) the children were illegitimate;
and (2) Susan Shumake had married another Shumake. Another option is that
(3) Susan was not Hannah's daughter, but had married one of her sons.
I do not yet possess enough information to decide among the alternatives.
By 1860, Mr. Sutherland has passed on, and Susan has married James McGarr
(dwelling 356). Margaret (18), Emily (15), and Frank (10, Franklin = David
F.) are shown under the McGarr name. The new children, Martha (7), James
K. Polk (6), and John R. (3), are there as well, as is Scotty (20). She
appears to have been married to a Hasting and given birth to three children:
Eliza (6), Alice (2), and James F. (four months).
In 1870, James McGarr is no longer in the household (dwelling 14, seventh
civil district), but the youngest daughter, Anna, is present, along with
her older siblings (except Scotty, Frank, and Martha Ann). (Martha has
married Lowra M. Merriman and has a son and daughter of her own.) Out
of curiosity, I've searched for Scotty and her son James in the online
1880 U.S. census, but to no avail.
Again, I'm sending this in the hope that this information, coupled with
whatever others may provide, will eventually result in the discovery of
Hannah's husband's identity. Perhaps someone has the key to the true relationship
between Hannah and Susan Shumake McGarr as well.
Sincerely, R. Grant Jones

Notes for DENNIS EARL "PETE" FERGUSON:
Dennis fought in World War II. He entered the marines in February
of 1 944 andtrained at Camp Elliott and Marine Base in California. A Great
American As years pass and times change, it seems a custom that people
are forg otten. I amwriting this article to preserve a life so that no
one will forget. Dennis Earl Ferguson was a great man who happened to
be a great American. He was bornon November 03, 1925 at a small community
in eastern Grayson County, Texas called Pilot Grove to Luther Ferguson
and Bessie Mae Scott. Though he was named Dennis he earned the nickname
of Pete. When he was about six months old himand his family moved by wagons
to Gunter Texas where some lived out their lives, but not Pet e. When
Pete was about 17, his father went to work at the old steam building in
Sherman, Texas. Luther told his son that there was a realpretty girl he
should meet, but Pete really didn't want to meet anyone who his father
thought was pretty. Pete eventually met the girl who his father had told
him so much about and soon fell in love. The girl was Mildred Goldston
and she didn't want to have anything to do with Pete.
One day while Mildredwas working, Pete went out to
her car and did something to it to where it wouldn't start. When Mildred
came out to leave, Pete ran to the rescue and fixed her car, their first
date was to t
he classic movie, Gone with the Wind. On July 24, 1943 at the age of 17,
Pete was married to Mildred.
In February of 1944, Pete entered the Marines and received his training
at Camp Elliott and Marine Base in California. He went on to serve in
the pacific during World War II and at one time was in China. After
he returned home, Pete and Mildred started their family. On January 06
of 1948 their first child was born, RonaldLynn "Ronnie" Ferguson,
followed by a daughter, Sherry Lea who was born on February 04 of 1951
. On March 25, 1955 another son, Dennis Wayne was born. Pete spent most
of his life in construction and moved around a lot. He was always proud
to have been a Marine and flew an American flag whenever possible. Pete's
parents and siblings moved to the small community of Hamby, n
ear Abilene, Texas. Pete and his family eventually moved out there with
them where a fourth child was born, David Ray, born on July 16, 1963.
Sometime later, Pete and his family, with the exception of Ronnie, moved
back to Grayson County, Texas where Mildred's family resided. Pete and
Mildred were the proud grandparents of six: Pamela Gayle Huff, Brandi
Dawn Jeffers, Kevin Wayne Ferguson, Shauna Jo Ferguson, Casey Ray Ferguson
and Kimberly Kay Ferguson. They enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren
and great grandchildren. Mildred passedaway February 20, 1996 at the age
of 70. Pete lived ten more years until May 25, 2006. Both are buried in
Van Alstyne Cemetery, Grayson County, T
exas. Pete lived a great life, serving his country, marrying the love
of his life, raising a family and watching them grow. Pete was a rare
American who was proud to have served his country and is forever missed
by all who knew him.

The Great Grandson of a Great American
Notes for MILDRED LEE GOLDSTON:
Cause of Death: > Cancer
Things were always happening to Mildred! One timeshe was at the Good
Will in Sherman (her favorite store) and she sat down totry on a pair
of shoes. She went to tie the shoes and all of the sudden something
hit her on the back. Before she knew it she was laying spread eagled on
the ground and matress' were falling on top of her one by one. Everyone
inthe store was looking at her... to this day I'm not sure if sh
e ended up buying the shoes or not. Mildred went to this old Gas Station
one time with her daughter, Sherry, and new grand-daughter, Pam. Sherry
was in the passenger seat and Mildred was driving. Mildred pulled into
the gas station and noticed i t was taking them a long time to come put
gas in her tank. Without hesitation she started honking. Sherry slumped
down in the seat... "It's a barber shopMomma!" she said. "Oh!"
Mildred said and drove off. Sherry said that all themen in the barber
shop turned in their chairs and just stared at them! Mildred, Sherry,
& Mildred's mother-in-law, Bessie were all out driving one day. They
stopped at a red light behind a truck that had a man and a dog in it,
and that was all. Bessie say's, "I wonder if that's one of them seeing
eye dog's?" "I hope not!" Mildred answers her. Feeding
the Hogs: When Mildred was a little girl & her mother was pregnant
with the twin
s, Loy and Troy, she went outside to help her mother feed the hogs. Mildred's
mother, Lois, was a small woman and she was pregnant with twins, so she
was bigger than usual. Mildred was afraid of the hogs, and when hogs see
or smell food they get excited and can get a little aggressive. So her
mother handed her a stick and told her that she was going to feed the
hogs and that if they started to act up to hit them with the stick. Well,
her mother went in the pen to feed them and evidently one acted up. Mildred
got so scared that she swung the stick and accidentally hit her mother
in the head with the stick.
A little while later they were sitting on the porch, her mother was still
trying to get rid of the pain inher head. By this time Mildred was a little
scared, and then her mother looked up over at her and said
? "You hit the wrong hog!" The day Mildred was buried set the
record hight temperature at somewhe
re around 95 degrees... this was in February. Mildred was 70 years, 9
months and 27 days old when she died.
