The following is added by H. D. Shuemake

1840 Census Bledsoe County, Tennessee

Hannah is shown with two boys in her home: The 1850 census show Hannah as being born in South Carolina.
1 male between 5-10,
1 male between 10 - 15.
She has
1 female under 5;
1 female 10-15;
1 female 15-20;
1 female, 50-60, apparently herself.

Note: In the 1830 census, there were two males under 10 years of age. In the 1940 census there were two males under 10, but if you keep with the 1930 census there would have been two males above 10 years of age. However, this would evident that one male has left the house hold and a new son has been born into the family. Thomas Shoemake was born in 1834 and his father died while his mother was pregnant with Thomas. Click here for more information on the Thomas who was born in 1834.

1830 Bledsoe County
Thomas Shomak (Shoemake) In his household were listed the following (all Free Colored Persons) page 279
2 males under 10 (Born in the 1820s)
1 male 55-100 ( believed to be Thomas)
2 females under 10
1 female 24-36 (Possibly Thomas's wife. Hannah was born in the 1890s in SC).).
1 female 55-100 (This could not have been Thomas' wife). This age for Hannah will not fit into other ages given for her in other places. The most Hannah could have been at this date would have been 39.

1880 Census, District 6, and 7 Bledsoe County, TN
Thomas Shumate, born in 1832, in Tennessee (Click here for reference on Thomas) This Thomas was Hannah's son.
----Rachel, wife, born in 1832, in Tennessee
----Rufus, son, born in 1854, in Tennessee
----Luciues, son, born in 1856, in Tennessee

Hannah Shumate was shown listed next to Thomas and was listed as his mother.
She was born in 1795 in the State of North Carolina. Living in the home of Hannah was:
A Margarett Shumate, born in 1847 in Tennessee. She could have well been a daughter
or daughter-in-law.

My Notes: After doing further research on Hannah Shumake, Shoemake, Shoemate, and her husband, it was learned that her husband's name was William according to a published article in the Compendium of Local Biographies, Bledsoe County, Tennessee. published by Mountain Press, P. O. Box 400, Signal Mtn., Tennessee. www.mountain press.com. The story was written about Thomas Shoemate. the son of Hannah. Click here to read the story.

Hamilton County Tennessee Court Case Research:
The following information has been researched by the following persons to which we give appreciation for their work.

(research sources of Jack Goins, Joanne Pezzullo, Kay Blanton, Penny Ferguson, editing thanks to Janet Crain)

In the "Celebrated Melungeon Case' which took place in Hamilton County in the 1870s, Judge Lewis Shepherd wrote that the mother of the central figure of this case, a beautiful young woman, daughter of a tenant farmer, who stole the heart of a rich man, was a Melungeon. A lot of things Shepherd wrote in his 1915 Memoirs have been speculated on by researchers for years. How much did he exaggerate, how much was fact, was the word Melungeon actually contained in the case, or did he come up with that term later? Most every researcher who has written about Melungeons has referenced the celebrated Shepherd Court case held in Hamilton County Tennessee. This has been an illusive case, sources researchers used for this case were newspaper articles or Shepherds writings on it. Having the actual court case answers a lot of these questions. The families mentioned in this case, the Goins, Shumake, Boltons, Perkins, Mornings, Menleys, Breedlove & others, are the same people Shepherd called Melungeons and he said to have come from the Pee Dee River area, across the mountains to now Hancock County, Tennessee, and spread out from there. The word Malungeon was actually introduced by the plaintiff, not Shepard, who was defense attorney. The final argument to the judge is not in this case, so if Shepard claimed in this argument they were from Carthage, it is not yet known.

Shepherd told in "A Romance of the Melungeons" of the law South Carolina had that taxed free “negroes” so much per capita, he says “they” always successfully resisted the payment of this tax.

“They left South Carolina at an early day and wandered across the mountains to Hancock County, East Tennessee; if fact, the majority of the people of that country are “Melungeons.” Or allied to them in some way. A few families of them drifted away from Hancock into the other counties of east Tennessee and now and then into the mountainous section of Middle Tennessee. Some of them live in White, some in Grundy and some in Franklin county. They seem to prefer living in a rough mountainous and sparsely Settled country.” Lewis shepherd "A Romance of the Melungeons.
